Sugaring FAQ

  • How does Sugaring work?

One of the earliest forms of hair removal, Sugaring has reportedly been practiced since 1900 BC. Though sources vary, Sugaring’s roots have most often been credited to Egypt and Persia. This simple technique has been practiced in homes for millennia and was only recently popularized in the United States.

The simplicity of the process is one of the many reasons this technique has endured for so long. Sugar paste is applied directly to cleansed and powdered skin, free of strips, and “flicked” off in the direction of hair growth for clean removal sans breakage. The same piece of sugar can be used over a large area preventing waste.

  • My skin is sensitive to waxing, will Sugaring hurt?

Due to the water soluble nature of the sugar paste, Sugaring is a much gentler alternative to waxing. Wax is often stabilized with synthetic polymers and added resins that make it stick to hair, keratinized cells (dead skin cells), and living cells which can lead to undesired sensitivity.

Sugaring uses water soluble ingredients that stick to the hair, and keratinized cells, but not to our plump hydrated living cells. Additionally sugar paste has a lower melting point which ensures comfortable applications, with no burns. It’s important to remember that while these factors all reduce the chances of discomfort, we are still removing hair at the root. This is where open communication with your esthetician plays a key role in ensuring the most comfortable experience possible. Generally clients experience the most sensitivity during their first visit, but with a regular maintenance cycle hair becomes thinner and easier to remove over time.

  • How long does my hair need to be to get sugared?

Hair length needs to be roughly 1/4”, that is one month after Sugaring, or 3 weeks since your last shave. It is recommended that you space your maintenance appointments every 4-6 weeks for best results.

When starting out with Sugaring you may notice some hairs growing back faster than others. This is due to the fact our hairs don’t naturally grow on the same cycle. It is best to avoid trimming, tweezing, or shaving between Sugaring appointments so that over time we may line up your growth cycles for longer lasting results over time.

  • Can I still get a Brazilian or Bikini Sugaring while menstruating?

Yes! All that is required is that a client have a tampon or menstrual cup placed prior to their Sugaring appointment. If you are not comfortable with receiving your service during your period and suspect they may overlap, it’s recommended that you reschedule your appointment to a date that suits your comfort levels. Please keep in mind rescheduling or cancelling an appointment with less that 24 hours notice will result in a 50% cancellation fee.

  • Is Sugaring safe for everyone?

Sugaring is generally safe for most clients but certain health conditions, or medications may require approval from your physician.

Sugaring is NOT recommended for anyone who has taken Accutane in the last 6 months, and it is advised that you discontinue use of chemical exfoliants and retinol products (on the area you want Sugared) for one week prior to your service.

If you have a compromised immune system or experience autoimmune skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis it is best to seek approval from your doctor.

Any areas with broken skin, such as cuts, stitches, recent surgical incisions, or sunburns cannot be Sugared. If you are taking medications that thin the skin (such as Retin-A), blood thinners, antibiotics, topical steroids, or medications that cause you to be sun-sensitive check with your doctor.

  • Will Sugaring reduce my ingrown hairs? What should I do to prepare for Sugaring before and after?

With proper aftercare many clients who Sugar see reduced ingrown hairs. This is due to the the fact that Sugaring removes hair in the direction of hair growth, rather than against it. By removing hairs in the direction of their natural growth we are reducing the chances of hairs breaking and getting caught in the follicle. Gentle exfoliation 2-3 times a week, along with moisturizing will condition skin and hairs to allow for softer regrowth. Avoid chemical exfoliation the week prior to your Sugaring appointment.

For the first 24-48 hours after your service it is recommended that you avoid vigorous workouts or extended sun exposure. Excess sweat, and friction can cause irritation to freshly opened follicles. Swimming, and baths should be avoided, but warm showers are still okay.
